Why Lubricate Your Switches?

Lubricating mechanical keyboard switches is one of the most impactful modifications you can make to improve both sound and feel. Stock switches often come from the factory with minimal or inconsistent lubrication, resulting in scratchy keystrokes, spring ping, and an overall rough typing experience. Properly lubed switches produce a deeper, more satisfying sound signature and a buttery-smooth keypress that transforms even budget switches into premium-feeling components. The difference is immediately noticeable — the scratchiness disappears, the bottom-out sounds fuller, and the overall typing experience becomes significantly more refined.

Tools You'll Need

Before starting, gather the essential supplies: a switch opener (specific to your switch brand, such as Kailh or Cherry MX style), a fine-tip brush (size 00 or 000), high-quality switch lubricant (Krytox 205g0 is the gold standard for linears, while Tribosys 3203 or 3204 works excellently for tactiles), a switch lubing station or tray to hold components, tweezers for handling small parts, and optionally a stem holder for precise application. Set up a clean, well-lit workspace and allocate several hours — lubing a full set of switches is a marathon, not a sprint.

Disassembly

Carefully open each switch using your switch opener by pressing down on the clips on either side of the housing. Separate the switch into its four main components: top housing, stem, spring, and bottom housing. Keep all parts organized in your lubing station. Inspect each component for any manufacturing defects or debris — this is also a good opportunity to apply switch films if you're using them to reduce housing wobble. Handle the springs carefully as they are small and easily lost.

Lubing Technique: Linear vs Tactile

For linear switches, apply Krytox 205g0 to the bottom housing rails where the stem slides, the stem legs and sliders, and lightly coat the spring by bag-lubing or brushing. The goal is smooth, consistent coverage without over-lubing. For tactile switches, the approach differs significantly — you must avoid lubricating the stem legs where they contact the leaf spring, as this can diminish or eliminate the tactile bump. Use a thinner lubricant like Tribosys 3203 and apply it sparingly to the stem sliders and housing rails while keeping the tactile legs completely dry. The spring should still be lightly lubed to eliminate ping, regardless of switch type.

Reassembly and Testing

Reassemble each switch in reverse order: place the spring in the bottom housing, insert the stem ensuring correct orientation, snap on the top housing, and press firmly until the clips engage. After assembling a batch, install a few switches into your keyboard and test them thoroughly. Listen for any remaining scratchiness or spring ping, and check that all keys register correctly. If a switch feels sluggish or mushy, you may have applied too much lubricant — disassemble and wipe off excess with a microfiber cloth. The result of your patience will be a keyboard that sounds and feels dramatically better than stock, making the hours of effort entirely worthwhile.
